Gas grid information

Our transmission system forms the basis of all services offered in connection with the transmission of natural gas. Inform yourself about technical data, grid connection and grid access.

Data & Facts

The grid access connects the terranets bw's gas pipelines with the transmission system of grid operators, gas storage facilities and installations of industrial customers.

The terranets bw transmission system has a length of approx. 2000 km and eleven entry points directly connect with transmission systems of the grid operators Open Grid Europe GmbH, GASCADE Gastransport GmbH, Fluxys TENPGmbH as well as bayernets GmbH. Two compressor stations in the area of Karlsruhe and Ulm ensure the capacity needed to transport natural gas quantities needed by consumers during peak load times. One completely integrated and one directly connected underground gas storage facility, connected to our transmission system, contributing significantly to system stability.

The grids of approx. 50 downstream exit grid operators as well as fourteen industrial end-consumers are connected to our high-pressure gas grid through more than 200 coupling points. About a further 70 exit grid operators are directly connected to the exit networks downstream. Connections to international network coupling partners exist at three cross-border points in the area of Lake Constance (Vorarlberg and East Switzerland), as well as in Basel.

The high-pressure gas pipeline of  terranets bw has an operating nominal pressure of up to 80 bar and extends over a total length of about 2000 km. Natural gas is transported through the pipeline system of terranets bw to approx. 200 grid connection and exit points.
The highest load in the business year 2019 was measured on 25.01.2019 between 07:00 o'clock and 08:00 o'clock. Within this time period, downstream grid operators and industrial customers had a total off-take of 21.869 MWh/h at the same time from our transmission system. The annual take-off in the business year 2019 amounted to 80.093.884 MWh.
We transport only H quality natural gas. The calorific value at the entry and exit points ranged between 11.04 kWh/m³N and 11.63 kWh/m³N in the business year 2019.

In order to process the shipping of gas within a market area, grid operators immediately downstream to terranets bw order in the upstream grid once a year for the respective following calendar year (“order year“) the maximum bookable firm exit capacity at grid coupling points or exit zones. In odd numbered years, directly downstream connected grid operators, make a non-binding forecast of their demand for ten years subsequent to the order year (long-term forecast), within the framework of the annual internal order.

The regulations set out in the Cooperation Agreement between the operators of gas supply transmission systems in Germany in their respectively relevant time period apply along with the terranets bw price list.

    Transparency Information

    According to Regulation (EC) No. 715/2009 of European Parliament and the Council on conditions for access to the natural gas transmission networks, and particularly to the Chapter 3 of Annex I of 10 November 2010, the European transmission system operators are bound to publish several updated information in a prevalent format on their websites regularly.

    According to Article 29 of Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/460 of 16 March 2017 establishing a network code on harmonised transmission tariff structures for gas, European transmission system operators are bound to publish information before the annual yearly capacity auction.

    In accordance with statutory regulations, terranets bw also offers interruptible entry and exit capacities. terranets bw is obliged to hold available the booked interruptible capacity at the agreed entry or exit points on an interruptible basis taking into consideration any possible allocation stipulations and usage restrictions.

    For the justification of the level of multipliers, terranets bw GmbH refers to BNetzA draft Decision BK9-19/612 (‘MARGIT 2021’, final decision is currently only available in German).

    BNetzA determined the discounts for interruptible capacity at interconnection points in its decision BK9-19-612 (‘MARGIT 2021’) Annex I. The methodology to calculate these discounts is described in chapter 6 of the decision. The English version of the consultation document – methodology as well as specific discounts have not been amended in the final decision – can be obtained here. The data to calculate the discounts have been published during the consultation of decision MARGIT 2021.

    The methodology to calculate discounts for interruptible capacity of storage points is specified in BNetzA decision BK9-18/608 (‘BEATE 2.0’, chapter 3.2). Hereby, probability of interruption Pro is derived from the data of the last three gas years of the respective entry and exit point according to the following formula:

    (K)u describes the maximum interrupted interruptible capacity on day t and (K)v describes the interruptible capacity marketed on day t. The probability of interruption is rounded up to full percentage and contains a safety margin of 10%, which represents the forecast uncertainty. The applicable discount corresponds to the probability of interruption and is independent of the product duration.
    The data to calculate the discount (sales and interruption of interruptible capacity) can be obtained at the ENTSOG transparency platform. In the last three gas years, no interruptions occurred at the following storage points, leading to a discount of not more than 10%.

    According to Article 30 of Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/460 of 16 March 2017 establishing a network code on harmonised transmission tariff structures for gas, European transmission system operators are bound to publish information before the tariff period.

    Relevant maintenance and repair work

    Our transmission system is always maintained as state-of-the art technology. Here you can find information about current maintenance, repair and construction work on the terranets bw pipeline system which could lead to capacity restrictions. Shippers or grid operators who are affected by such measures are informed about possible shipping capacity constraints in due time.


    Interruptions

    Unrestricted gas transmission within the terranets bw gas pipeline system was possible from 2006 to 2011 as well as in 2013 and 2014. Despite regional capacity constraints, interruption of the interruptible capacity could be avoided with the help of internal switching and replacement measures.
