COMPRESSOR STATION: "GASVERDICHTERSTATION SCHARENSTETTEN"

Due to the increasing demand for gas transmission capacity, it is necessary to develop the gas transmission system in Baden-Württemberg. One of the measures taken by terranets bw is to expand  the gas compressor station in Scharenstetten near Ulm. The gas compressor station has been an important hub in the terranets bw transmission system since 1988 and has made a significant contribution to a secure energy supply.

To transport gas over long distances, gas compressor stations are need to compress the gas to the required pressure. The gas compressor station in Scharenstetten ensures that gas can be transported from Ulm to the state capital Stuttgart and to Lake Contance, to the Principality Liechtenstein as well as Vorarlberg. In the spring of 2017 the gas compressor station was expanded by a fourth compressor unit.

In the middle of March 2020, work began to replace two existing compressor units with modern, more efficient engines. In the summer, installation of the first of the two modern compressor units is planned. On completion of the necessary integration work, this is expected to be used for gas transmission in the spring of 2021. After that, installation of the second compressor unit will begin and should be completed by spring 2022. By using state-of-the-art gas turbine technology, the capacity of the compressor station will be improved by a total of 60%. In addition to this, emissions will fall significantly under the legal requirements.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Gas flows through underground pipelines and reaches the compressor station at a pressure of 40 bar. First, dust and moisture are filtered out and subsequently the gas is led to the compressor and is brought to the required pressure. A gas turbine provides the energy needed for the compression process.

The compression process heats up the gas to a maximum of 70 °C. It is therefore passed through gas coolers that cool it down to operating temperature again. The gas is then led through a metering section before being fed back into the terranets bw transmission system at a pressure of 70 bar.

Approval for the expansion work is a public-law approval in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG). The responsible approving authority is the Regional Council of Freiburg. The community of Dornstadt and the local authorities of Alb-Donau-Kreis were also involved in the procedure. In order to achieve a broad consensus with all parties, terranets bw involved the municipalities and other stakeholders affected by the project at an early stage.

During the expansion work, the construction site equipment and its storage space already set up outside the gas compressor station will continue to be needed. As the new compressor units will be installed instead of two existing compressor units, no further area outside the existing station will be required.

Replacing two existing compressor units with modern, more efficient engines will not change the appearance because this change will happen inside the existing building. The gas compressor station will maintain its characteristic four chimneys.

In the summer, installation of the first of the two modern compressor units is planned. On completion of the necessary integration work, this is expected to be used for gas transmission in the spring of 2021. After that, installation of the second compressor unit will begin and should be completed by spring 2022.

During the expansion works, the construction site equipment and its storage space already set up outside the gas compressor station will continue to be needed. In nearer proximity to the construction works, deliveries to the construction site will increase from the middle of March 2020 and increased noise levels can be expected. However, the increased noise levels will not affect the nearest residential areas.

From the end of March 2020 to the end of October 2020 there will be a speed limit at the entrance of the gas compressor station and the road known as “Vor dem Hochwang“ between the construction site equipment and the storage area and the gas compressor station will be closed.
